There are moments when an idea stops living on paper and finally steps into real life. For us, Stride Forward had one of those moments this year.
Our very first Stride Forward after school cohort officially wrapped after 12 powerful weeks at Yonkers Arts, and it was everything we hoped for and more.
What Is Stride Forward?
Stride Forward is an after school enrichment program created by Straight Walk Runway with one clear mission: to help young people build confidence, discipline, and self-worth through runway training, self expression, and personal development.
This program is not about creating models only. It is about helping students stand taller in who they are, communicate with confidence, and learn how to show up in the world with purpose.
Launching Our First Cohort at Yonkers Arts
Partnering with Yonkers Arts for our inaugural cohort was a full circle moment. Over the course of 12 weeks, students committed to showing up consistently, learning new skills, and pushing past their comfort zones.
Each week, our sessions combined:
- Runway and movement training
- Confidence-building exercises
- Group discussions around self-esteem and mindset
- Creative expression and teamwork
- Professional etiquette and presence
Students learned how posture affects confidence, how walking with intention changes how you feel, and how discipline on the runway translates into discipline in everyday life.
Watching Growth in Real Time
One of the most powerful parts of this cohort was witnessing the transformation.
Students who started the program shy and reserved began speaking up. Students who doubted themselves started leading. We saw confidence grow not just in how they walked, but in how they talked, interacted with peers, and carried themselves.
Stride Forward created a safe space where students felt seen, supported, and encouraged to be themselves while still striving for growth.

More Than a Program, It’s a Foundation
Stride Forward is intentionally designed to support students beyond the runway. The skills taught during this 12-week cohort go far past modeling:
- Confidence in public speaking
- Emotional awareness and self-expression
- Accountability and consistency
- Respect for self and others
- Understanding personal presence and image
These are life skills that students will carry into school, social settings, and future opportunities.
Celebrating Our First Graduates
Completing our first Stride Forward cohort was a milestone we are incredibly proud of. Each student who committed to all 12 weeks showed resilience, growth, and determination.
Graduation was not just about finishing a program. It was about honoring the work each student put into themselves.
What’s Next for Stride Forward
This first cohort confirmed what we already believed: programs like Stride Forward are needed.
We look forward to expanding Stride Forward into more schools, community centers, and creative spaces, continuing to empower youth through confidence-based education and structured creative programming.
If you are a school, organization, or community partner interested in bringing Stride Forward to your space, we would love to connect.
Stride Forward is just getting started, and this first walk at Yonkers Arts will always be a part of our foundation.
